The volcanic archipelago Cabo Verde with its 9 inhabited islands is located about 600km from the West African mainland and about 2000km south of the Canarian Islands. It is divided into the group of islands in the Barlavento (up wind) with Boa Vista, Sal, Santa Luzia, Santo Antão, São Nicolau and São Vicente and the Sotavento (“under the wind”) islands Maio, Brava, Fogo and Santiago,

Before being discovered by the Portuguese in 1456, the Cabo Verde islands were uninhabited. Today, a majority of about 500,000 inhabitants are of mixed Portuguese and African ancestry, and Cabo Verde is known for its Creole Portuguese-African culture and Morna music. More than the same number of Capverdians live abroad (mainly in the Boston area and in Europe). The Republic of Cape Verde reached its independence from Portugal in 1975.

I am delighted that you want to come and stay with me in Sal in one of my beautiful Cabo Libre apartments. Unfortunately, I cannot offer you flights myself, and the prices deter many people who simply search for them on any search engine.

First you should choose the right flight company: TuiFly Germany , Tui Fly Belgium, Tui Fly Netherlands, Tui Fly Uk

The best thing to do is to first search for a suitable outbound flight and then the appropriate return flight in the TUI Fly search engine:

tui.com – Book flights – Outbound flight only – Suitable departure airport (you can also select your country  (in Germany Munich is not included there) – Destination – SID (Sal – Cape Verde) – then enter the travel date and click on “Find flights”.

You can then find out about the selection – make sure that “TAP” is not listed there, as this means that the flight will be operated by this Portuguese airline and is usually quite expensive. The outbound flight goes via the Cape Verdean island of Boavista (approx. 6 hours 15 minutes) with a short refuelling stop, during which you remain on the plane, followed by a 15-minute flight to Sal. On the return journey, the flight goes directly from Sal to the airport in Germany (approx. 5 hours 45 minutes).

Currently, flights to Cape Verde are relatively expensive to book on a long-term basis. Package holiday flights are preferred (usually also quite expensive) and then become cheaper in stages depending on availability in the last 3 weeks before departure (currently even earlier for autumn!). Flights usually become slightly more expensive again at weekends (apparently because more people want to book then). If you have the choice, you can monitor several airports.

The price levels at TUI: Maximum prices are often 599 or 499 (i.g. they don’t want to sell any flights in the long term). Then the prices continue to fall in increments (often only  Euro 20) (e.g. 469 – 449 – 429 – 399 – 379 – 339 – 319 – 299). Only then does it slowly become interesting – normally there are still many flights available at this point. It then continues down to sometimes Euro 139,- per single flight.

Of course, you have to be careful that there aren’t suddenly no flights left at all (I usually look for 8 people right away – and if they’re still available, then you can relax a little). Even if the maximum prices are suddenly offered again (599 or 499 Euro), it seems that all tickets are gone.

Please note: all prices quoted are for the PURE fare, which only includes hand luggage. The Perfect fare is Euro 50 more expensive and includes 20 kg of luggage, a snack and a drink, as well as free rebooking up to 7 days before the flight.

I hope you all find suitable flights to enjoy a wonderful time in Cape Verde. I rarely pay more than €400 for a return flight. If you fly to Cape Verde frequently, you can book everything at the PURE rate with the TUI Titan Card (TUI Germany) and get 30 kg of luggage and special luggage as well as comfort or XL seats at no extra charge. This also applies to up to five fellow passengers, which may be of interest to groups!

I will regularly post information about cheap flights here. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or post them here. However, all information is provided without guarantee!

After booking:

You must register with EASE up to 6 days before your departure date (it is also possible to register closer to the departure date, but sometimes you have to try the registration process several times) and pay an airport tax of 3400 ESC (30.83 euros). Be careful, there are some fake websites – only use the official one (https://www.ease.gov.cv). When asked for your accommodation details, enter the information corresponding to the accommodation you have booked (for Cabolibre Apartments: Rua das Salinas 23, 4111 Santa Maria).

In the meantime, you can skip this procedure altogether and simply pay the airport tax directly upon arrival at the airport in Sal.

Best regards!
Rainer
